USS Ranger (CV-4)

USS Ranger Reunion Association

The 2010 reunion is September 22nd-25th.
For more information, see below.

Do you know about this great organization entitled the USS RANGER (CVA/CV-61) Reunion Association, Inc.? Yes, we are incorporated, as a non-profit group.

For several years, since 1988, a great group of RANGERMEN, started by plankowner, John Muzio (V-1 Division) had been meeting once a year to renew former friendships. It became clear to them that the ship deserved better recognition than just a few people who swapped sea stories once a year. In August 1990, those who attended the Reunion in Charleston, SC, decided to expend the time and the effort to organize and accomplish some positive "good" in the name of our ship.

There are all types of former sailors from RANGER, plankowners, seamen, chiefs, officers and former Commanding officers, including TAD's, Squadron members, and Marine Detachment, all RANGERMEN, who cherish the memories and superb performance of RANGER!

Some of us have forgotten the important pieces of history that RANGER participated in the development of a Navy for the United States. The current USS RANGER (CVA/CV-61) is the 7th ship to bear the name RANGER. The 1st RANGER was the first man-o-war, an 18-gun sloop of war, of the fledgling United States to defeat a British ship – HMS Blake. We have a superb historian, Frank Thoma, who will keep you spellbound with stories of the RANGER’s achievements, with his assortment of cruise books, and memorabilia, through Desert Storm, donated by our former shipmates.

Our USS RANGER (CVA/CV-61) Reunion Association, Inc. has as its purpose, clearly stated in its documents, to promote charitable and educational purposes. We will offer charitable contributions to such groups as the USS Ranger Foundation (Save Ranger!), Support our Ships, and the Navy Memorial Association.

Once a year we will have a reunion where we will gather to share our common camaraderie as RANGERMEN. Swap sea stories?, Yes!, Conduct business?, Yes!. All towards achieving our goals in the name of our ship, the USS RANGER (CVA/CV61).

The only membership rule is that you formerly served on the CVA/CV-61 as a crewmember, member of an attached Air Group, or support staff. The annual dues are $10.00, for three years $25 and for Life Membership only $75.00.

It is estimated that over 50,000 men have served on the USS RANGER (CVA/CV-61) since her commissioning in 1957 to her decommissioning in 1993. We must preserve her high standards of performance and accomplishments by joining and contributing to the historical significance of our great ship, and perpetuate our motto, "TOP GUN – BAR NONE!"

RADM H.P. Glindeman, Jr.
Commanding Officer
1971-1973

San Antonio, TX Reunion 2010

It's time to look ahead to 2010 and "kick up your heels or kick off your boots" as they like to say, as our next year's reunion is in San Antonio, TX and we want you to get excited now. San Antonio is filled with "can't miss" attractions such as the famed River Walk, the Alamo, the El Mercado Market Square (largest Mexican Market this side of the Rio Grande and only 2 blocks from our hotel) and the Admiral Nimitz Museum (in nearby Fredericksburg) just to name a few. We have arranged for a good hotel at the Radisson Hotel Downtown Market Square and a great room rate of $95 that includes free parking, full American breakfast, "Welcome" reception, complimentary shuttle to the River Walk and Downtown attractions (this is besides the $1 famous trolley service that stops outside the front door of the hotel) and easy access from the freeways for those that drive. We will have some great tours and lots of down time for you to enjoy camaraderie with your fellow members. Mark your calendars for September 22 - 25, 2010. The reunion is open to former Shipmates, Marines, Squadron members and TAD's. Hope to see you there.

Mobile Hotel The 2009 annual Ranger Reunion was held in Mobile, Alabama, hosted by Larry Schmuhl, ((OZ Div/IOIC, 72-74)and his wife Mary. There were over 90 former Ranger shipmates and their spouses/guests in attendance, with more than 31 "first timers". The E,OZ & OP Divisions were heavily represented, with shipmates who got together after more than 40 years! The weather was outstanding, as was the hotel, the tours, and everyone had a wonderful time. Larry brought the attendees up to date as to Ranger's status, and berthing locations available in Portland. Shipmates expressed their enthusiasm of getting together again next year (2010), in San Antonio. For more
The 2008 Reunion was held at the Radisson Hotel Valley Forge, (King of Prussia, PA), and hosted by Franklin Thoma, (P-1 Division, 1973-1976) from 13 August 2008 to 17 August 2008.
The 2007 Reunion was held in Clackamas, OR, and hosted by RADM "Hank" Glindeman, (Commanding Officer 1971-1973) was a very successful turnout, shipmates got together for sea stories, and an update from the Ranger Foundation as to the status of Ranger coming to the Portland area. Over 150 former Rangermen plus their spouses were in attendance.( Over 55 "first timers")
The 2006 Reunion, hosted by Terry Palmer, was a great success. It was held in Minneapolis, MN August 9-13th at the Ramada Inn & Thunderbird Convention Center. Being across the street from the Mall of America did not hurt the fun the ladies had and the trips and tours Terry lined up were well received by attendees.
