Captain Hickey was born in Watertown, NY, on 10 November 1942. He graduated from Watertown High School in June 1960, and entered the NROTC program that fall at Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA. He received his commission upon graduation from Holy Cross in June 1964, and entered flight training shortly thereafter at NAS Pensacola. He was designated a Naval Aviator in October 1965.
Captain Hickey entered the fighter community, reporting to VF-101 at Key West for F-4 Phantom training, and joined VF-143 in May of 1966. After deployments on board the USS Ranger (CVA-61) and the USS Constellation (CVA-64), he reported to the 436th Tactical Fighter Squadron for exchange duty flying with the U.S. Air Force at Homestead AFB, FL. In May 1970, Captain Hickey returned to sea duty with VF-74 at NAS Oceana, deploying aboard USS Forrestal (CVA-59) and USS America (CVA-66).
Following his sea tour, Captain Hickey attended the Armed Forces Staff College, and then reported to VF-124 at Miramar as an F-14 instructor pilot. In January 1976, he reported to the Pentagon as TACAIR Analyst in OPNV (OP 962). In October of that year he transferred to the Bureau of Naval Personnel as the Fighter Placement Officer.
In 1978 Captain Hickey returned to NAS Miramar as Executive Officer of VF-124. He assued the duties of Executive Ovvicer of VF-2 in January 1979 and fleeted up to Commainding Officer in March 1980, deploying aboard the USS Ranger (CV-61). Captain Hickey was then assigned to the staff of Commander Naval Air Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet for nine months. He assumed command of CVW-11 abooard USS Enterprise (CVN-65) in November 1982.
Following his CAG tour, Captain Hickey was assigned to the staff of Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor for eighteeen months. He assumed command of the USS Roanoke (AOR-7) in July 1986 as was relieved of that command on 29 April 1988. On 8 July 1988, Captain Hickey beame the 26th CO of the USS Ranger (CV-61).
Captain Hickey has completed two Mediterranean and isx Western Pacific deployments, including threee combat deployments to Southeast Asia. He has flown 221 combat missions, shot down a MiG-21 in air-to-air combat, and logged over 1,000 carrier landings. Among his awards and decorations are the Silver Str, the Leion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, and sixteen Air Medals. Captain Hickey is married to the former Marilyn Glowe of Winnepeg, Manitoba, Canada. They reside in San Diego. Their two children, Bobby and Kristen, are college students.
