Captain Dennis Vincent McGinn

Captain Dennis V. McGinn was born and raised in Attleboro, Massachusetts. He is a 1967 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. Following graduation and commissioning he entered flight training and was designated a Naval Aviator in January 1969.
Captain McGinn reported to Lemoore California for training as a Light Attack Pilot in March 1969. He made two combat deployments to the Western Pacific with VA-113 aboard USS Ranger (CVA-61). In July 1973, Captain McGinn commenced training at Navy Test Pilot School, Patuxent River, MD. Upon graduation, he reported to VX-5, China Lake, CA, where he served as a test pilot and Air Warfare Tactics Officer.
In March 1977, Captain McGinn returned to the Pacific Fleet Light Attack Wing where he served as Operations and Maintenance Officer in VA-146 aboard USS Constellation (CV-64). Following two Western Pacific and Indian Ocean deployments, Captain McGinn assumed command of the Light Attack Weapons School Pacific at Naval Air Station Lemoore, CA. In 1980, he reported as Executive Officer to VA-27 aboard USS Coral Sea (CV-43). Captain McGinn took command of VA-27 in September 1981 while deployed to the Western Pacific.
Following his squadron command tour, Captain McGinn was assigned as Chief Strike Test Pilot at the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River. In September 1984 he returned to Lemoore for training in the FA-18 Strike Fighter aircraft. He assumed command of VF-125 in December 1984.
Captain McGinn reported to USS Coral Sea (CV-43) as Executive Officer in June 1986. Following several Atlantic Fleet exercises and a deployment to the Mediterranean Sea, he returned to Norfolk, VA for duty on the Staff of Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic in January 1988.
In December 1988, Captain McGinn assumed command of USS Wichita (AOR-1), A Pacific Fleet replenishment oiler home ported in Oakland, CA. During his command tour aboard WICHITA, the ship participated in several fleet exercises including PACEX-89, the largest Pacific Fleet exercise since World War II. WICHITA was a Surface Force, Pacific Battle "E" winner and made a Western Pacific/Indian Ocean deployment following PACEX-89.
In August 1990, Captain McGinn reported to the Strategic Studies Group, Naval War College, Newport, RI as a Chief of Naval Operations Fellow. During the One-year fellowship, the Group studied the future strategic environment and the challenges that the nation and Naval service will face over the next twenty years.
Captain McGinn's awards include the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal and eighteen Air Medals. He attended the post command course at the Naval War College, and the Program for Senior Officials in National Security, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. He is a member of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots.
Captain McGinn and his wife Kelly reside in Coronado, CA. They have four children, John, David, Daniel and Susan.
